Built between 1477 and 1479 AD (882-884 AH) by order of Sultan Al-Ashraf Abu Al-Nasr Qaitbay, the Citadel of Qaitbay was designed to protect Alexandria from growing threats, particularly from the Ottoman Empire.
The fortress was constructed on the very site of the ancient Lighthouse of Alexandria—one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Few realize that remnants of the legendary lighthouse were repurposed in building the citadel. Walking through its corridors today means treading on stones that once formed part of one of the world’s greatest architectural wonders!
Throughout history, the citadel has witnessed fierce battles, cultural exchanges, and the rise and fall of empires. It was not merely a military stronghold but also a vital part of Alexandria’s evolving cultural and historical identity.
Although the historical significance of the Citadel of Qaitbay is well documented, mysteries and legends continue to surround it:
Remnants of the Lighthouse: Some divers claim to have discovered underwater ruins near the citadel that may be fragments of the ancient Lighthouse of Alexandria. Could these legendary stones have survived the destruction of one of history’s most famous landmarks?
Secret Tunnels: Persistent rumors speak of hidden tunnels beneath the fortress, possibly linking it to other strategic locations in Alexandria. Were these passageways used for escape, secret trade routes, or something else? The truth remains unverified, adding to the citadel’s enigmatic appeal.
Ghostly Whispers: Many believe the fortress walls hold echoes of the past, with spirits of warriors and sailors who perished in battles still lingering. Some visitors report feeling an eerie presence while wandering through the fortress at sunset.
